THE PROBLEM
As the pontoon boat market continues to evolve and gain popularity, touch screens and more advanced electronics are now the norm. Integrating these advancements into existing helm platforms can provide a challenge. Because larger touch screens are in demand, incorporating them into a tight package can easily disrupt the ergonomics of the entire dash, potentially frustrating customers. With this in mind, how do you create a new premium option helm that integrates current electronics and provides superior ergonomics?
THE SOLUTION
The design solution centers around an asymmetrical layout that places a touch screen on the right and gauges to the left. The angled 7” screen is placed similar to a current automobile infotainment screen for familiarity. Because it is offset to the right, the steering wheel is not in the way from the driver interacting with the screen. Gauges are then placed directly ahead of the driver, again, just like an automobile. All switches are located below the gauges in one location so the driver never has to search around the helm for the desired function. Audio controls were placed on the right side of the helm where other riders could easily access it, even if not seated at the helm. The new design was created with the flexibility to have different trim options that include elevated accent trim, vinyl wrapped top cap, switch bezel, foot pad, etc.
THE RESULT
The result is a pontoon helm that successfully incorporates the necessary updated electronics that not only doesn’t compromise ergonomics and functionality, the design elevates it. By utilizing the asymmetrical design, the dashboard has the familiarity of an automobile and functions just as naturally.
